Beyond defense of innocence and its destruction

Modernism never ends. It is because it is a myth that is created with elaboration. Modernism has two aspects. One is full of brightness and beauty, while another is scary and violent. The former corresponds to innocence, while the latter refers to reductionism. Once both are joined, they exclude and eliminate any things confronting them. The term “innocence” includes a sense of vocation of which it inquires into the functions and limitations of media and identifies essence of the media in an artistic and philosophical manner. For this reason, the artists who manifested this sense of vocation inevitably put value on the genealogical connection. On the other hand, the term “reductionism” gave all values and glory to the artists who had been consistently sticking to purist view of the world exploring functions and limitations of media, while the violence trying to steer clear of the target of values lurks in the rest of artists. We commonly call “modernism” to refer to this phenomenon of which this sense of vocation and violence hold hands together and shake the world, and we once thought that this had ended in the history. However, the intense sense of vocation and violence can never disappear. It is because, in art, it is the most powerful temptation and joy being attractive and beautiful.
When modernism met the artist’s view of the world and the philosophical rhetoric “self,” its explosive charm manifested more and was mythicized with sophisticated approaches. In the course of solitary journey in search of purity (innocence), Mark Rothko was forced to die because he was looking for God, while Jackson Pollock was doomed to die because he reached the end of decadence. Their deaths have become a myth and the art they had left has become an altar. Thus, the purest art is this devilish. Moreover, reductionism forms a genealogy of artists who used to paint the trajectory of innocence. However, the genealogy is also a fallacy of affection that overflows exclusively toward the legitimate child inheriting the blood lineage.
Park Jong-kyu was the first artist who understood the fallacy of sublime beauty of art and its fatal affection. To escape from fallacy of affection, he paid attention to media other than painting and applied himself to them, from an early stage. Just turning 20, he started to study perspectives of camera, full of infiniteness, boundlessness and diversity, and learned the meaning of “transfiguration” of which any object per se can transform into art. However, the mainstream of our country’s art realm was centered on innocence. In Daegu, where he was born and grew up, paintings based on abstract expressionism or minimalism were taking the lead as well. The atmosphere was even intense because Daegu was the first stage where modernism had settled first and further developed.
In calligraphic painting of Seokjae Seo Byeong-oh, we can also perceive mental innocence deeply rooted beneath. The figurative art of Lee Insung and Lee Quede also look for the essence of objects and nature of humans. The first-generation artists of Daegu art circle such as Jeong Jeom-sik, Chang Seok-su, Ju Gyeong, Yoo Byeong-su, Kang Woo-mun and Kim Jin-tae also pursue innocence. In particular, Park Jong-kyu looked up Geukjae Jeong Jeom-sik and Dongje Yoo Byeong-su as his art mentors-masters. Both masters had made a milestone in the history of abstract art in our country, and they consistently stuck to the thought of which mentality of classical scholars (seonbi) and art must be one. In other words, according to them, both “literature” and “art” serve as a dish to contain “Taoism” and extraordinary talent or splendid techniques are considered secondary. Moreover, Park Jong-kyu was also inspired by deep formalism practiced by senior artists such as Lee Gang-so, Choi Byeong-so and Lee Gyo-jun. However, he wished to step forward beyond formalism of purity (innocence).
At the age of 25, Park Jong-kyu started his studies at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in France. During the period, he was greatly influenced by Claude Viallat, the representative figure in Support/Surfaces movement. The French word “support” refers to “supporter” in painting, while the French word “surface” meaning “surface” refers to the canvas, emphasizing innovation of painting canvas. This intended to commercial elements involved in painting or mythological elements intervened in painting. By giving up all elements trying to mythicize painting such as signature, date of creation and title, it objectifies neutral features of canvas. Like this, Park Jong-kyu was deeply moved by the atmosphere pursuing innovative attitudes, and met his true mentor-master Braco Dimitrijević. This Bosnian conceptual artist was the icon of innovation who stated that “Louvre is my studio, street is my museum.” The innovative artist took pictures of citizens he met in the street and printed them in a large size. With the strategy of hanging them in the downtown, he attacked mystification and commercialization of images. At the same time, he ridiculed authority of art museum system by exhibiting celebrated works from famous art museums along with daily products and fruits. When TV stars, politicians, celebrities and wealthy capitalists were being mystified through mass media, Dimitrijević challenged against authority of the system in company with citizens.
We usually think that the real essence of the world of Park Jong-kyu consists in formalist beauty of painting but we are wrong. This is only extension of his attitude trying to approach the world. Masters from his hometown taught him that art media was truth, in other words, nothing but a dish that contains one’s mental values and character. Nonetheless, he was a modernist for he stuck to innocence until the end. On the contrary, masters he met abroad were iconoclasts, namely, those who break worshiped images, who wished to peel off the mythology of modernism. To follow the former group, it is required to jump up over the genealogy of innocence and this leads to stay in the aesthetic conservatism. You need to be a Mark Rothko kid or put on the jacket of Lee Ufan. To follow the latter group, you will have to violate the thesis (thèse) of Karl Mannheim, “the conditioned existence reasoning (Seinsverbundenheit).” In other words, it means that you deny existentiality of which “human ideas or consciousness is bound by the situation in which each individual encounters.” However, Park Jong-kyu understood the methodology of carrying out attitude and art of the world of Braco Dimitrijević in a meta-cognitive manner. Park Jong-kyu has been deeply concerned on the way of compromising advantages from his masters from home and abroad, and inquired into the way of finding the clue. Would it be impossible to find any common points? Definitely it is possible. In fact, both Innocence and Innovation stem from the capital letter “I.” The direction that thoroughly affirms “I” (self) was accorded. Here, Park Jong-kyu paid attention to the poetic expression written by Arthur Rimbaud, “ I is another (Je est un autre).” He could capture the excessive philosophical rhetoric and the unfairness of aesthetic packaging possessed by “I” or the self.
The large capital “I” meaning “the self” becomes a base where art can exist. Individual mythology is produced and the art museum is an institutional altar where they consecrate to this mythology. The large capital “I” embraces the premise that the self assures truth. However, Park Jong-kyu thought in a different manner. In his idea, truth is not something “discovered” but “produced.” In other words, the self is not a fixed substance, but a dynamic mechanism that can change, fluctuate, grow and decline. Instead of delving into truth, he valued transfer of perspectives of looking at the world and he chose it for real. In the world, there are something that one can possess and one cannot. What cannot be possessed is illusion made by humans. It is desire. However, you can deepen mountains, wind, field and starlight in your mind. Park Jong-kyu realized the multiple dynamics through movement of perspectives. After understanding the way of solidifying the apparently colliding thoughts of his masters as one, he began looking outside.
We are not able to know about the universe, no matter how much we try. Neither natural science nor life philosophy can give the clue. Everything is nothing but the world of frame. Nevertheless, there must be a definite perspective approaching the universe. From a broader view, this can be fractals or bubbles. Looking at it smaller, it can end up being “nothingness” beyond molecules or particles. Park Jong-kyu deeply concerned on the movement of perspectives of the self and the process, and this made him pay attention to the features of computers. The essence of a computer work consists in the fact that it is not the product created by the self. It is a computing structure based on a binary system created by 0 and 1. This simple arrangement is more rapid and precise than human calculation does. When the computing capacity outpaces humans, humans transform into nothing but a tool of the computer. Long time ago, Park Jong-kyu predicted the possible fall of human existence as a means to save and operate computers. Out of the arrangement of 0 and 1 with the orderliness that is even beautiful, this becomes a phenomenon. The computer provides us with a beautiful screen, harmonious sounds, mathematical answers and accurate prediction results. However, not all calculations and programs based on 0 and 1 can be perfect. The more the computer carries out calculation, the higher the entropy will be. With increased entropy, the computer will be tired making a noise. However, if we enlarge this uncomfortable phenomenon called “noise,” this manifests an orderly aspect as well. The noise is rearranged as digital virtuality, in other words, pixel images, and the computer printer transform the pixel images into the substance called “contact papers.” After tearing off the lines and dots arranged by the computer printer, the acrylic paint is carefully applied. This is considered the product of his strong will to surpass domains of both aesthetic innocence and innovation trying to remove the veil of innocence.
The work of Park Jong-kyu balanced between aesthetic innocence and innovation toward the world is a product of a groundbreaking project. He transforms the conventional concept of “the self” into the term “movement” or “transfer.” Without damaging innocence of modernism, he infuses new energy into the territory. While thoroughly keeping the thesis (thèse) of conditioned existence of reasoning (Seinsverbundenheit), his work does not fail to appease the hunger of iconoclasts. This is the very greatness of his universe. Artist Ikeda Ryoji transform the musical codes into visual codes. He is a visual DJ. Another artist Carsten Nicolai visualizes scientific reference systems and mathematical codes and structures music in a visual manner. He is considered a scientific artist. However, by essence, they are different from Park Jong-kyu whose intention was to identify possibilities and limitations from conditioned existence of the self. They are anesthetists. They just borrowed a jacket called “art” to highlight music, their passion, and increase their aura. Art belonging to Park Jong-kyu is the result of which he gradually achieved by repeating ontological struggles and reconciliation with all networks from the base he had trodden himself. That is existential art that was born throughout a long period of time after having taken roots in the soil. For this reason, he surpasses the artists above mentioned. Now it is the turn of the world to discover art and thoughts of Park Jong-kyu.

여기서 박정규 작가는 시인 아르튀르 랭보(Arthur Rimbaud)가 “나는 타인이다(I is another)”고 썼던 시어를 주목했다.
