단색조의 회화

단색화는 1970년대 초반에서부터 단색화에 해당하는 작품들이 등장하기 시작하면서 1970년대 중반을 넘어서면서 한국 현대 미술의 대표적인 경향으로 떠올랐다. 정확히 누구에서 라기 보다는 일정한 시기에 적지 않은 작가들에 의해 시도된 일종의 공유된 의식의 구현이라고 말할 수 있다. 한국의 단색화는 자연과 어우러진 독창적 직관에서 시작한다. 이미지를 화면에서 제거하고 단일한 색조를 명도와 채도에 변화를 주어 표현함으로서 캔버스라는 물질적 표면을 사물의 본원적 성질로 정의하고 이를 반복적인 기법과 행위를 통해 나타내는 장르이다. 단색화는 청색, 흑색, 붉은색 등으로 여러 색 층으로 뒤 덮여 있기도 하면 한가지의 주요한 단색을 지향하고 있기도 하다. 이에 서구의 모노크롬 회화와 다른 한국 미술의 고유한 특성이 발견 된다.단색화는 평면에 한국의 유구한 역사와 전통에 뿌리를 둔 고유의 정신성을 담고 있기 때문이다. 특히 현재 1960-80대에 이르는 전기 단색화 작가들은 자연을 다치지 않는 한국의 독특한 자연관을 바탕으로 자연과 동화되는 모습을 보여주고 있어 주목된다. 이번 단색화의 예술 전의 작품을 통해 몰아일체된 순간과 과정의 회화를 경험하게 될 것이다.

Art of Dansaekhwa
Participating Artists: Yoon Hyong-keun, Chung Chang-sup, Choi Byung-So, Kwon Young-woo, Lee Dongyeop, Lee Seung-Jo, Kim Tae Ho
Dansaekhwa, the Korean monochrome painting, started from the early 1970s. From the mid-1970s, it became a representative style of Korean contemporary art. It did not start from the exact time with a certain person. However, Dansaekhwa can be defined as a communal consciousness of several Korean artists in a certain time period. Dansaekhwa starts from the unique consciousness within the nature. The image is erased from the surface, only monochrome tone, and change in brightness and chroma creates the work. These monochrome paintings define the materiality of the canvas, and accomplish the work within the process of repetitive actions and techniques. Dansaekhwa reflects the history of Korea and tradition in the surface of the flatness. Especially Dansaekhwas from 1960-1980s attract the attention of the public due to its assimilation of Korean nature. Art of Dansaekhwa will provide the audience an experience to assimilate into the artwork.
Chung Chang-Sup’s Dak, Dak tree from Korea, reveals the world of abundant materiality.
Kwon Young-woo’s geometry of Hanji, the Korean mulberry paper, through piercing, cutting, and digging the paper.
Lee Seung-Jo’s nuclear through matt and immaterial composition of the canvas.
Choi Byung-So’s black paintings through the painting of newspaper with ballpoint pen and pencil for 40 years.
Lee Dongyeop’s Interspace series which he depicted pure whiteness of his whole life.
Yoon Hyung-keun’s Amber Blue which he pursued the moderation of the scholar’s mind.
The nature of Korea is reflected within their work displayed in the exhibition.
