Choi Byung-So - Birth from disappearance

1. From a page of Newspaper
There is a page of Newspaper.
Instead of ‘reading’ it, he stares at it and starts to fill it with straight lines with a ball point pen, until all the letters and even the white space disappearance in to endless darkness. And again, without a word, he grabs his pencil and starts to draw more lines. Black graphite covers the ink with his ceaseless motion until the paper more or less resembles a rag.
There is another page of Newspaper.
Without any thought to the meanings of the words in the page he paints the page with Chinese ink. It becomes a block of graphite and is made into an envelope.

2. Hot issues in Discourse of Western Modernism
One day a man chooses a flat and thin Newspaper. However, this flat Newspaper is strangely transformed into pressed graphite block after countless pencil strokes on top of innumerable ball point pen lines and Chinese ink. The paper starts to emit its nature of material strongly.
This unnamed newspaper already deleted all the weather information and report and in turn, lost its ready-made art value as well as social values. Probably even the artist would not remember, the date and the reports on the newspaper and most likely doesn’t feel the need to remember. If it was important he would have written it down somewhere. The paper no longer possesses the original function of itself and is no longer flat but tattered black material laid down like a corpse. But how does this corpse like material emit the sorrow and innocence of the man’s each stroke?
Flatness of two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional nature of material, ready-made and creativity, immortal masterpieces and singular action, Kitsch and artistic sublimity are all hot issues in discourse of Western modernism. However, in the 20th century, controversies in Western modernism undergo progressive and dialectic process, and are passed on to other cultures. The third world artists were able to transform this into another form of art through the process of digestion and excretion. This is the dietary treatment of Cultural Appropriation.
Therefore, taking the meaning of a man persistently drawing lines and the black material from that action in Korea and reapplying to issues conceived from controversies in discourse of western modernism is analogous to reaffirming the taste and smell of food from digested excrement. Cultural Appropriation is similar to process of digestion and excretion of food, and the ‘body’ grows from the nutrients.
Flatness and nature of material, ready-made art and action, stroking and erasing sublimity are jumble together and mixed to give birth to new mode of art. Despite this one man’s lonely process, he has been only recognized as ‘Monochrome Painting’ related to Korean white-color in reference to language used in discourse of western modernism.

3. 1970’s Korean Monochromatic Painting
Korean art world experienced a strong wave of ‘Monochrome painting’ for a good while. In the past, even in recent times, forerunners representing the 1970’s Korean art have been ‘Monochrome’ highly evaluated for its individuality. But, personally I do not used the term ‘Monochrome Painting,’ especially ‘White color Monochrome’ to describe the tendency of 1970’s Korean art, inevitably I have used term ‘Monotone Painting’. Instead of emphasizing the visual or physical impression of color, it expresses subtle color tone connoted with spiritual meanings.
At any rate, Korean Monochromatic Painting is said to have its starting point in Tokyo Gallery in Japan in 1975 during the exhibition of 5 White colors of 5 Korean Artists. After extensive research the origin of this has been found that a man named Yanagi Muneyoshi who pitied Korea during colonial period his aimed to identify Korean art through its visual impression and language and has become a standard. After a half century in 1970s, Japanese art critics and those who are concerned with the exhibition prepared for two years. They visited and explored Korea and discovered once again ‘White color of Korea’. From the start, intention of the exhibition originated from their interest in Korean white porcelain and continuously focused their search to the meaning of ‘white color’.
Once again after two years, there was a second exhibition titled A Facet of Contemporary Korean Art with the help of continuous interest in Japan. Despite inclusion of sculpture, paintings and etc from various artist and trends, it is regarded as the second sequel illuminating the first exhibition which professes ‘white color’ representing Korean traditional aesthetic consciousness. And in 1977 exhibition of A Facet of Contemporary Korean Art, a man who gave lonely birth to black torn material from a newspaper kept silence in the face of whirlwind of ‘White Monochrome Painting’.

4. Flatness, Nature of Material in discourse of Modernism and society
I know several artists in 1960-1970s that formed art discussion from newspaper ready-made.
After awakening from the fact that 2-dimensional flatness can only be hypothesis in 3-dimensional world from the discussion of Western modernism which focused on the flatness of modernism painting, one can come to think of Arte Povera artist Luciano Fabro’s newspaper on foor (1967), Japanese artist Kanejaki Hiroshi who laid down newspaper in Kyoto Art Gallery’s Context exhibition in 1972, and Korean artist Seong, Neung-Gyeong who stacked cut-out newspaper articles during his exhibition in 1974. All these differ in context, but they are all concerned wish flatness and nature of material. Seong, Neung-Gyeong especially, speaks out against the president Park’s renovation era.
If Fabro and Hiroshi chose newspaper during the whirlpool of astute discourse western modernism regarding issue of 3-dimensional nature of material from flatness, Korean artist Seong, Neung-Gyeong took two transparent acrylic boxes and placed contents of newspaper in cut-out articles in a discursive way in one box. And then, he piled up remainder of blank spaces and cartoon section of the newspaper one by one neatly in the other box. To him, his action reflects the meaninglessness of social language during President Park’s renovation era. He told me that “I wanted to in the makings of history.”
In 1970 winter In Republic of Korea, a man completely fills the newspaper with lines with ball point pen and then draws innumerable lines again in pencil until the paper is in rags that strike out all and any evidence that if was once a newspaper. From social history of art point of view, this action reflects much more extreme and ghastly resistance than cutting out newspaper articles and rumpling them. Meaning of newspaper as means of social communication has been completely obliterated and thoroughly ignored by giving another form of existence. Also, looking at it from side of history of art form it implies that ready-made flat newspaper is no longer considered two-dimensional plane. It imposes and emphasized the nature of material of newspaper.
Dual structure. One of them is in 1970s during the historical reality of renovation of republic when he demonstrated against in social communication in Solitude. Another is when he applies cultural appropriation to give birth to new form after the process of digestion, excretion to result growth of ‘body’ from issues of discourse of western modernism.
One man’s inner dual structure reiterates 1970s Korean art and another outward safety net. It was time of growth and darkness intersects each other and when artistic social voice was almost unacceptable and isolated by society. Aura of Korean Monochrome painting advocates transcendence and fundamental principles of Lao-tzu, and Chuang-tzu and plays a leading role in the art circle. The sound from the gap between outward structure and inner structure is kept silent. He protests in silence as if he is oppressing something surging within, and the meaning embedded in his silent resistance is buried under brilliant scream of Korean Monotone painting, under the name of ‘monochrome painter’.

5. Again
As if old and weathered, and worn and scattered with holes, it is neither a smooth plane nor shape of solid material of any kind. Curiosity of the material leads one to touch this material only to stop and see that it is already crumbling at places and would fall apart at the touch of a finger. It seems like it’s enshrining long ago history reminiscent of ancient papyrus discovered in the Dead Sea. If it is art, how should it be exhibited, by hanging on the wall or suspending it in the air? There would be people who would like to call this art based on the faint evidence of drawing and erasing, but some would argue in sullen words how this tattered and crumpled black sheet iron-like material could be painting. There is another dilemma; should it be placed on the floor like the copper plate of Carl Andre since it cannot be placed like a sculpture; there is no feel of massiveness. It still feels uneasy about placing it on the floor when a touch of a tip could crumple it to pieces.
This unidentifiable tattered material is made from a one man’s tenacious strokes over a long time. It is not the same as the drawing of CyTwombly’s several swings. This is the product of a man’s engrossment of countless hours of labor perhaps engaged in other thoughts. Now and then he probably felt delighted and comforted by his strokes but sometimes he was driven by pain, pent-up anger and with sighs all fused in one man’s life.
Korean social and political circumstances in 1970s are now part of past history, and the aura of Korean Monotone Paintings also remains as a page in the history. And a man is once again confronting a newspaper and endlessly stroking and erasing after a long hiatus in the name of art. We don’t have to remain ourselves of the aura of past history from the action that gave birth to ragged and unidentifiable material. The material deeply holds the soul of a lonely man and is reflected brilliantly and transparently in our eyes and spirit.
He is Choi, Byung-So and resides in Daegu.
