This exhibition will focus on the charm of paper once again and provide an opportunity to feel its artistic possibility. Paper functions as the most important medium of painting with its universality and possibility, also it reflects the spirit of artists through the impulsive inspiration comes along with the high quality work with various materials such as pencil, ink, watercolor and oil. Sometimes paper is used out of its intrinsic function and induce artists to the new way of thinking. Folding, ripping, attaching, mantling and dismantling paper would draw an inherent aesthetic, semiotic and sensible value throughout two and three dimensionality. The texture, smell, crumpled form, various shapes of paper would stimulate our senses while embodying delicacy and deep emotions. Also the passionate artistic inspiration can be embodied delicately through the familiarity of paper which every audience feel. This exhibition examined the formality and materiality of paper. The paperwork of the great artists of Korean contemporary art is displayed in the exhibition. Therefore the communication with the audience and the paperwork is expected.

Choi Byung-So 1943-
Choi Byung-So uses newspaper and ballpoint pen which can be easily seen in everyday life as his primary materials. He continues to cover the newspaper with numerous characters with the ballpoint pen over and over again, and erase the trace of the pen with the pencil to create a monochrome surface. Through this process, the newspaper became thin, ripped, and finally just remained as black peel paper. The artist continues to concentrate on the integration the newspaper and ballpoint pen. Two materials absorb themselves, ripped, burnt, and finally combusted. Choi Byung-So trains his spirit through this process and experiences his living. At last the newspaper becomes one sublime purity.

Kwon Young-woo 1926-2013
Kwon Young woo’s work is based on the texture of paper as the formative language. He cuts, pastes, tears off the work trying to change constantly. He surpassed the limit of the East and the West, pursued the pure monochrome painting. From 1960s, he broke the limitation of brush and ink. He tried to do abstract works using hanji, the traditional Korean paper, such as making a hole in the paper. The artist noted, “my work starts from making a canvas with the rice paper. One sheet, two sheets, several sheets are overlapped, teared, pierced, and colored. I sometimes color the front side of paper, and sometimes from the back to make the ink ran all over the paper. The number of sheets overlapped, and the pastes on the paper is consistent. However when it is teared and pierced, every situation is different. Therefore the color on the surface is different every time. Every time I expect and seek new, and spontaneous situation.”

Kim Tschang-yeul 1929-
Kim Tschang-yeul, the water drop painter, started to paint water drops from 1972. His water drops are hyper-realistic and, at the same time, highly conceptual. On the traditional Korean paper, he writes calligraphy and paint the water drops. Painting the water drops is the act of transparently absorbing everything inside of the water drops and pass them into nothingness. His water drops changes with the background. In the mid-1980s, he express the eastern concept with the water drops on the thousand-character classic. The text he uses is divided into two. One is print letters and the other is the calligraphy. From 1990s, he focused on the reversion of yin and yang, the eastern tradition.

Choi Myoung Young 1941-
In 1960s, Korean art went through the transition period. The artists sought for the essential nature of the painting pursed the flatness. Choi Myoung Young used his thought, words and time to erase the paint which was previously used. Without consciousness, the artist pushed the paint away from the confined framework of the canvas. He painted overlapped the canvas preceding erasure. Through this process, he tried to materialize the new flatness.

Kwak In-Sik 1919-1988
Monoha is the style of art which access the materials just within its materiality, space, situation, and relation between the other materials. Kwak In-Sik is acclaimed due to his influential approach on Monoha. He graduated Tokyo University of Art in 1941, and worked mostly in Japan. Therefore his accomplishment is not praised in Korea as in Japan. Kwak created the flat pure image which simplified the circular form on the mulberry paper from late-1970s. He put a layer of rice-sized color and ink dots constantly to pursue the materiality of the mulberry paper. The colorful dots creates cheerful images and also the awareness of the space.

Chung Chang-Sup 1972-2011
Chung Chang-Sup put ink on the mulberry paper in 1970s. From 1980s he created his own glue paste, and attach the paste on the canvas evenly and touch to absorb it into the canvas. These process reveals the craftsmanship of Korea, the artist and the material united through the repetition of the process. When the Dak paper, the paper made of Dak tree, is dried, it expresses its own materiality. The even direction of the fibers of the paper adds the rhythmicality. The spontaneous wrinkles of the surface creates the contrast between light and shadow which gives the work dynamic quality. His working process completed without consciousness, and created with the spontaneous expression of the paper made from the time.

Park Kiwon 1964-
Park Kiwon is the artist of the year in 2010, designated by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea. He uses space as his subject, creates his own unique work. From 1990, he constantly showed the realistic and simple work. From the mid-1990s, he focused on the space and material to suggest new way of appreciating art to the audience. His unique artworks were praised by the public. The artist noted “artwork was completed with the different directions of little lines in each side within the divided space. The flow of color is usually connected with the green color, it is because I started to work thinking about the four seasons of nature. My work is the expression of space, emptiness, and originality on the flat paper.”
